Autumn Term 1

Autumn Term 1

Boom Kapow Splat!

Our exciting topic for this term is all about Superheroes. In Science we will be drawing and labelling parts of our bodies and learning how to eat and live healthily. This also links with our work in DT on healthy eating and designing healthy foods. In History we will be finding out about the lives of significant people from the past who were real life superheroes, such as Florence Nightingale. In PE the children will develop their superhero strength with lots of outdoor team games with superheroes and villains. In Music we will be learning songs and chants and creating our own superhero tunes.

In English our Talk for Writing focus story is The Enormous Turnip. We will learn to retell the story, explore repeated patterns and phrase in the text and describe the different characters in the story. We will also re-invent the story and practise using finger spaces, capital letters and full stops.

In Maths we follow a maths scheme called White Rose maths. This term we will cover Place Value, counting accurately up to ten and ordering numbers on a number line. Writing numbers correctly and finding one more and one less. We will also be teaching addition and subtraction using a part whole model, making number bonds to ten and adding numbers up to ten.

Phonics lessons will begin in week two of the term, but we will be listening to all children read in their first week. Your child will be given a reading book by Friday 9th September. Please ensure that once books are placed in bookbags, you ensure your child brings their book bag every day as we read three times a week for reading practise sessions.

In Year One, spellings are done weekly. In your child's reading record a sticker will appear with around 6-10 spellings to practise 3 times a week. Spelling certain tricky words and common exception words is so important in Year One so please support your child at home with this.

Reading books will be changed every Monday and Wednesday. The books that are changed on a Monday are those required for their reading practise session also, and those on a Wednesday are a supplement for reading for pleasure book.

We will also be doing Forest schools this year. We will let you know if your child has a forest school day and what appropriate clothing they may need.

Homework

There are three homework projects for you to choose from and they can be handed in at any time this term up until half term. Homework can come in any format you choose, it may be photographs, videos, drawings, a piece of writing, a powerpoint, a model or other type of artwork. You can use books to research and even visit the library to help you.

  • Cook a healthy recipe and show what you have made.
  • Create your own superhero and show what their super powers are.
  • Find out about an amazing person from history, eg Florence Nightingale, Grace Darling, Neil Armstrong.
