Year 2: Spiders

Welcome to the Spiders!

Hello and welcome!

*Meet the Spider grown-ups*

The grown-ups in the Spider class are Mrs Desforges and Mrs Hooton. We love teaching the Spiders and we are so proud of their achievements!

If you ever have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Thank you!

*Our Christian Value for the term*

Our Christian value this term is ‘Justice.’

Justice means giving all people what it is right and fair for them to have: life, health, freedom and dignity.

It is about acting out of a concern for what is right.

When we think about justice, we also think about the British Value of Tolerance and Mutual Respect and Democracy.

Deuteronomy 16:20: Follow justice and justice alone.

*Our Learning for this term*

English
This term in English, children will write for different purposes linked to their learning across the curriculum. They will write instructions and explanations based on how bread is made in Design Technology. They will also write a recount and letter about their visit to Hartsholme. In addition, children will complete writing linked to their transition to Year 3.
Spellings – We will continue to send weekly spellings home on a Friday in reading diaries for the children to practice over the week. These will always include common exception words and are linked to our Little Wandle Spelling programme.
Please continue to read your child’s Little Wandle book at home or share a story together. Thank you! 😊

Maths
This term, children will consolidate what they have learnt in preparation for their “Secret Agent Training.” We will also cover our ‘Position and direction’ unit. The Maths scrapbook activities are optional and will be sent home once a fortnight.

Topic
In Science, they will learn about food chains and identify producers, consumers and predators. They will also enjoy Science Week, taking part in experiments linked to science, technology, engineering and maths to develop curiosity and enquiry skills.

In Geography, children will learn to name and locate the seven continents and five oceans using maps, atlases and globes. They will also explore different climates around the world, focusing on hot areas near the Equator and cold areas near the North and South Poles.

In Design Technology, children will explore bread from different parts of Europe. They will taste and test different breads, learn how bread is made, and develop skills in designing, following a recipe and evaluating their finished product.

In PSHE, pupils will focus on safety and wellbeing, learning how to respond to emergencies, including home, water and fire safety. They will also learn how to stay safe in different environments and manage feelings during times of change and transition.

In Music, children will use pitch, duration and dynamics to create music, and will apply their skills by composing a soundtrack for a silent film.

In Art, they will study the work of Brianna McCarthy and create portrait collages using a range of papers, exploring layering, texture and representation of women.

Home Learning Ideas

  • Watch World Cup football matches or highlights and choose a player to follow. Find out which country they are from, which continent it is in, and whether it is hot or cold there.
  • Create a continent and oceans quiz or game at home using maps or atlases. Can you name and locate the seven continents and five oceans?
  • Practise position and direction at home using simple compass words like left, right, forwards and backwards. Give directions to move a toy or family member around a room.
  • Remember to check your Maths Challenge Scrapbook!
