Transition times for children with SEND

How will the school support my child through key transitions?

Some children will require additional support towards the end of the school year as they prepare to move into a new classroom with a different teacher.  We have ‘All change days’ for children to have a taster experience in their new classroom with their new teacher.  We also ensure that there are ample opportunities for key pupils to visit their new classroom to enjoy story time, play an activity or deliver a message.  These simple, short and specific experiences help to ease anxiety.

Year 2 pupils are given various opportunities in our school to prepare them to transfer to our local Junior school, St Faith’s and St Martin’s CE Junior School. There are several induction events across Year 2 to enable all children to become familiar with their new environment and key teaching staff. If your child is on the SEND register, they will be offered ‘enhanced’ transition arrangements and the SENDCO at SFSM, Miss Brighton, will be invited to review meetings prior to transfer. Items such as ‘photobooks’ can be prepared if your child needs this support.

We will, of course, make similar arrangements with any other school your child is transferring to.

All of the above are subject to change, as they have been in the last 2 years. Therefore, we will add that the arrangements are COVID dependent! If our planned transition cannot go ahead, we always make sure that enough transition is in place for your child to have a successful start at their new setting.
