Autumn Term 2

A Picture Postcard

Our exciting topic for this half term is called ‘A Picture Postcard’.

In Science we will be learning about everyday materials. Distinguishing between an object and the material from which it is made. We will also be identifying seasonal changes across the four seasons. In Geography this term we will be learning about locational knowledge of the four countries of the United Kingdom and the surrounding seas. In Music the children will be learning to listen with concentration and understanding to a range of high quality live and recorded music. Exploring percussion instruments and making music together. We will be learning songs for our Year 1 sing-a-long in December. In PE the children will be learning fundamental moving skills where they will experience movement and balance on one foot. The children are working on their personal skills of following instructions, not giving up and asking for help when appropriate. In PSHE the children will be learning what the word respect means for both our school value and the Fundamental British values. We will be participating in Anti-Bullying week by celebrating Odd Socks Day on Monday 14th November. We will be learning about being kind to people at school, at home, in the community and online.  We will be celebrating Wonderful Wednesday on Wednesday 16th November and Children in Need on Friday the 18th November, please wear spotty or colourful clothes. What a busy week!

In English our Talk for Writing focus story is ‘How to Catch a Star’. We will learn how to retell the story and explore the characters. We will also re-invent the story and practice using finger spaces, capital letters and full stops.

In Maths we follow a Maths scheme called White Rose Maths. This term we will continue to cover place value but will extend it to numbers to twenty and we will also cover naming and recognizing both 2D and 3D shapes. We will be counting accurately up to twenty and ordering numbers on a number line. Writing numbers correctly and learning about subtraction using a number line.

Termly common exception words

In Year One, spellings are done weekly. In your child’s reading record a sticker will appear with around 6-10 spellings to practise 3 times a week. Spelling certain tricky words and common exception words is so important in Year One so please support your child at home with this.

Phonics info and Reading

The children participate in a phonics session daily first thing in the morning and they will take part in a group reading practice each week three times in class. Please ensure that your child has their reading book and reading record book with them each day. Included in your child’s reading record book will be your child’s spellings on a sticker. Please support your child at home with their spellings.

Reading books are changed on a Monday for the week and these are the books which are required for the reading practice sessions. Your child will also bring home a book from our school library which is their reading for pleasure book these will be changed when your child’s class has their library time.
