Year 2: Dragonflies

Welcomtthe Dragonflies!

Hello and welcome!

*Meet the Dragonflies grown-ups*

The grown-ups in the Dragonfly class are Mrs Walton, Mrs Kemal, Mrs Uzzell and Miss Jones. We love teaching the Dragonflies and we are so proud of their achievements!

If you ever have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Thank you!

*Our Christian Value for the term*

Our Christian value for this term is 'Compassion'.

Compassion and sympathy have much in common and both are stronger in meaning than simply ‘feeling sorry for’ someone. The words have their roots in the idea of ‘suffering with’ someone, putting yourself in someone else’s shoes and experiencing what they experience.

“I would rather make mistakes in kindness and compassion than work miracles in unkindness and hardness.”

Mother Teresa

‘Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.’ Colossians 3:12

*Our Learning for this term*

This term our topic is:

This term our topic will be Out of this World! We will be learning all about Neil Armstrong, the Moon landing and all things space.

In History, we will be focusing on the significant individual, Neil Armstrong, to find out all about his achievements and his impact on the world today.

In DT, we will also be designing, creating and evaluating our own Moon Buggy! We will be using tools and mechanisms to create a suitable structure.

In Science, our topic this term is Plants. We will be planting our own seeds, making predictions and conducting an experiment on what plants need to germinate and grow.

In R.E, we will be thinking all about faith in everyday life, such as spreading good news, including the Gospel, and how we can make good choices.

In Computing, the children will be learning about how to react and respond to something online that worries them.

In Music, we will learning about musical notation and combining sounds to create our own rhythms and tunes.

In PSHE we are thinking about what it means to belong to a community and how our roles and responsibilities are important to our local area.

In P.E we will be continuing our learning in Gymnastics to develop our balance and agility.

In English, we will develop our writing through Talk for Writing with our focus on both Amazing Grace by Mary Hoffman and Bob’s Best Ever Friend by Simon Bartram. Over the term, we will be developing our skills in writing a diary entry through exploring writing in the first person, using expanded noun phrases and developing vocabulary. The children will continue to focus on their handwriting and spelling as we practice different joins and common exception words. In Guided Reading, we will also be covering two texts written by Oliver Jeffers and a non-fiction book all about our planet.

We will be continuing with the White Rose Maths scheme of learning. In this term, children will cover two topics: Money and Multiplication and Division. The children will also take part in a daily maths mastery activity to develop fluency and understanding.

Spellings – We will be continuing to look for spellings in the children’s writing throughout the day. We will send the spellings home in the children’s spellings books as usual.

Alongside our PE with the Lincoln City Football Club outreach team, IMPS on a Tuesday, the children will also do PE on a Friday.  It is essential that all children have the correct PE Kit for Gymnastics for Safety when using the equipment.

PE is  on a Tuesday and Friday this term.

Keep a close eye on Twitter to see all of the fabulous things that we are getting up to!

Please find below the English focus text and the accompanying text map.

As part of Talk For Writing, each unit of English work comes with a model text. This is a shorter version of a full book. The model text includes key vocabulary, grammar and spelling rules that the children need to practise and learn through Year Two.

The children must learn as much of the text by heart as they can and use the text map to help them to remember it. In school, we would would do this over a 3-5 days however sometimes it may take longer. The children can add actions, like we do in school, to also help them remember it.

Your child may also like to draw their own text map which also supports them recalling the facts from memory.

Please practise reading the model text with your child at home so they become very familiar with it. It will help them greatly during the next few weeks in their non-fiction writing.
