Week one

Gardening Club, Week One

What a glorious sunshiney day to kick off our first Gardening club! The children were very excited to get started!

For our first session we had the job of clearing the weeds from the existing courtyard bedding areas ready for planting our vegetable seeds next week! The children all donned their gardening gloves (they looked very professional!) and got to work with enthusiasm I really hadn't anticipated given the task!

We also discussed what a plant needs to grow and how we can help them thrive. We finished our chat with getting our hands well and truly muddy planting Lobelia seeds which the children picked and were able to take home to nurture. I am excited to see how they grow!

The children were also handed their very own special gardening log which is a lovely booklet where they can write what we have planted and when, updates on plant progress and lots of fun activities inside too to do at home, in school, at the park or anywhere really!

We finished our first session by sitting in the peace garden, picking a flower/plant to draw and describing its properties. The children then discussed and compared their choices with each other. This was particularly lovely as they were very complimentary of each others work. What a fantastic gardening team they are!

Next week (weather permitting) we will be sewing some vegetable seeds of the children's choice in the courtyard raised beds, we will establish a rota for the children to come and help with watering and also be taking home some more seeds to look after and watch grow! Should we not be able to go outside we have many preplanned alternatives to keep us busy and green fingered despite the English climate! We will keep you posted!
